Introducing Katherina – interiors and decorating advisor, giving you the confidence to update, refresh or restyle your home…
We moved into our current home at the height of lockdown. As life is with little ones in tow we unpacked as fast as we could and that was that. As much as we love our home it just wasn’t working for us, I was completely despairing about the relentless mess and no matter how many times a week the cleaner came or I rearranged the toys nothing seemed to do the trick. I had really fallen out of love with the space and was drowning in mess stress when a message from Katherina popped up asking if I would be interested in a collaboration. A few days later she turned up at my house, I was honestly a little embarrassed to show her around despite trying so hard to do some sorting and clearing before her arrival and I had no need to be – Katherina was so warm, calm and reassuring – she jumped straight into tackling the house. Before I continue, it is worth mentioning here that if you like me are able to find sentimental value in just about anything – Katherina is your woman, she was sensitive and understanding but helped me to have a well needed clear out!
First up was our little boy’s room and WOW what a difference a very quick shuffle around of the furniture and a bag full of charity shop donations made! All of a sudden there was space to play and read stories, no more squeezing around each other as we got him ready for bed! Katherina gave us a few affordable recommendations for some items we could purchase to further improve the room – I can’t wait to share the final result with you!
F's Bedroom
Next up was the lounge – being part of an entirely open plan ground floor this was the serious stress bearer of our home. Another shuffle around and I just couldn’t believe the transformation! Little things as simple as turning a piece of furniture upright rather than lying flat immediately created so much space. We discussed how we envisaged the room working, what was needed for it to work – a space for us to unwind and entertain but also a play area for our children. Katherina set out creating a designated space for the toys including a corner for role play in a toy shop, a space for drawing and Duplo. The purpose of this was to stop the overwhelming spread of toys which were repeatedly taking over the whole room. Katherina suggested I stick some of F’s artwork up in his new designated space and again, such a quick, easy change made so much difference. I was a little sceptical about how well this new space would contain the mess but when F returned from nursery that day he was SO delighted with the new play area and low and behold – it took me minutes to clear up the floor when he had gone to bed! In fact I was so relaxed, I found myself able to focus on solely playing with him rather than fretting about a toy explosion! Rather than retiring to our room to watch tv, we spent all evening relaxing on the sofa admiring our new child/ toy free area, extremely excited to fulfil Katherina’s list of small and completely doable improvements to the house.
Top tip!
As I am seeing lots of homes filled with gorgeous little children and animals I do think these washable rugs are an option. I love the pop of colour on this fun rug by @ruggable
